School of Nursing, Jiujiang University is located at the foot of Lushan Mountain in Jiangxi Province, the birthplace of the Chinese Nursing Association. It was founded in 1901 by the Methodist Church in the United States as a nursing school affiliated with Danford Hospital and is one of the birthplaces of nursing education in China. The first dean was Mary Stone (Meiyu Shi), a pioneer in modern medicine of China. Zheying Wu, the first Chinese president of the Chinese Nursing Association known as the "Mother of Chinese Nursing", graduated from here. The undergraduate program education has been started since 2003. In 2019, the nursing undergraduate program was approved as one of the first-class undergraduate program construction sites in Jiangxi Province. In 2022, it also ranked the second place in the comprehensive evaluation of undergraduate programs in colleges and universities in Jiangxi Province and was approved as the provincial four-star major. It has cultivated a large number of advanced and applied professionals in the field of nursing.
The nursing program currently has a well-structured and highly educated "dual-qualified" teaching faculty, one provincial experimental teaching demonstration center, and 14 practical teaching bases. It has formed a distinctive educational approach characterized by "two earlys and four strengthenings" in nursing talent cultivation (i.e., early exposure to the profession and early practical training; strengthening compassionate care, professional fundamentals, practical abilities, and innovative integration). Graduates enjoy a favorable employment situation and high overall evaluations. Currently, the nursing program has an annual enrollment plan of 250 students, with 842 students currently enrolled.
Faculty
The nursing program adopts a faculty development system combining full-time college teachers with clinical part-time teachers. There are currently 30 teachers, including 24 full-time college teachers and 6 clinical part-time teachers (excluding those for comprehensive education courses and professional foundation courses). Among them, there are 13 senior-level titles, 6 PhDs, 2 PhD candidates, and 96% of teachers are "dual-qualified". In 2020, the college's community nursing team was approved as a high-level undergraduate teaching team in Jiangxi Province. In the past five years, the college has undertaken 1 National Natural Science Foundation project, 12 provincial and ministerial-level projects, and 4 collaborative education projects by the Ministry of Education; published over 50 academic papers. In recent years, the college has won 2 second prizes for teaching achievements in Jiangxi Province, 12 school-level achievement awards, 4 first-class courses in Jiangxi Province, and 13 school-level first-class and demonstration courses; undertaken 10 provincial education reform projects; and been approved for 5 national and 11 provincial college student innovation and entrepreneurship projects.
Teaching Conditions
The Nursing Lab Center was awarded the title of Jiangxi Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center in 2009 and passed its review in 2022. In 2023, it was designated as a training base for elderly care talent cultivation in Jiangxi Province by the Jiangxi Provincial Civil Affairs Department. The Lab Center has an area of about 10,000 square meters and has 86 laboratories, including lab of basic nursing, lab of medical and surgical nursing, lab of emergency and critical care, lab of high-fidelity delivery room, lab of pediatric nursing, lab of rehabilitation nursing, lab of geriatric nursing, lab of community nursing, research laboratories, and so on. It has been equipped with advanced domestic and international teaching models and instruments valued at over RMB 17 million. Among them, there are 3 high-fidelity labs, including a high-fidelity birthing room, an emergency and critical care lab, and a comprehensive nursing lab, equipped with NOELLE high-fidelity maternity simulators, trauma emergency high-fidelity simulators, comprehensive nursing simulators, as well as obstetric virtual simulation systems and intravenous infusion virtual simulation systems, which can realistically simulate clinical environments and patients, fostering students' clinical thinking abilities.
To achieve the goal of early and repeated clinical exposure, six tertiary hospitals in Jiujiang City, as well as over 10 other units such as psychiatric hospitals, welfare homes, and community health service centers, have been selected as practical teaching bases for inter-class practical training, undertaking practical training tasks for professional courses. Fourteen graduation internship bases have been selected, all of which are tertiary hospitals located in cities such as Jiujiang, Nanchang, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Zhejiang.
Employment Situation of Graduates
Since the graduation of the first cohort of undergraduate nursing students in 2007, the undergraduate nursing program has had 1,472 graduates across 18 cohorts. In the past four years, the employment rate of undergraduate graduates has reached 85.42%, with a high degree of professional fit. Over 85% of graduates choose to work in medical institutions, including Fang Yao from the 2023 cohort, who is now employed at Asklepios Kliniken in Germany. The 2021 cohort had 87 graduates with an employment rate of 89.53%; the 2022 cohort had 199 graduates with an employment rate of 88.94%; the 2023 cohort had 184 graduates with an employment rate of 79.89%; and the 2024 cohort has 153 graduates with an employment rate of 83.33%.

Ninety-two students have been awarded the title of "Meritorious Student" at the municipal or school level, 269 have been honored as "Excellent Student Cadres", and 112 have received titles such as "Excellent Graduates". Graduates demonstrate high overall qualities, with typical figures such as "Excellent Nurse of Jiangxi Province" Wang Dingxin, "Red Cross Moving Figure" Chen Wenting, and "Entrepreneurial Excellence Individual" Yan Jiangyun being well-regarded by employers.
